A superluminescent diode is a semiconductor optoelectronic device that is located between a laser (LD) and a light emitting diode (LED). Similar to a laser diode, a superluminescent diode is based on an electrically driven pn junction. When forward biased, the pn junction exhibits optical activity and produces amplified spontaneous emission over a wide wavelength range.
